How to choose a pool safety inspector
Check that the inspector is licensed by QBCC, ask for the total price in writing, and ask what a re-inspection costs, because after a Form 26 notice QBCC says the same inspector must re-inspect within 3 months. QBCC says there is no set charge for a full inspection, and encourages you to get a few quotes. A licensed inspector decides whether a pool meets the standard, and QBCC says giving a view on whether a pool meets the standard counts as an inspection.Source: QBCC, Inspect and certify a pool (page reviewed 30 Aug 2021) and QBCC fact sheet on advisory services (effective June 2026), both read 31 Oct 2026.
1. Check the licence
Only an inspector licensed by QBCC can issue a pool safety certificate. Look the inspector up on QBCC's pool safety inspector search (opens in a new tab). PoolPreCert's directory is built from QBCC's register file of August 2024, and licences renew every year, so a listing here is a starting point. Check current status on QBCC's search before you book.
2. Ask for the total price
QBCC says costs vary between inspectors. Ask for the total, including any certificate fee, GST and travel, before you book. Our cost guide has price ranges we read on 9 October 2026 and what moves them, so we do not repeat the figures here.
3. Questions worth asking
| Ask | Why |
|---|---|
| What is the total, including any certificate fee, GST and travel? | Some inspectors quote the inspection only. QBCC says there is no set charge, so two quotes can look different. |
| What does a re-inspection cost? | QBCC says that after a Form 26 notice, the same inspector must re-inspect within 3 months. You usually cannot swap inspectors in that time. |
| Can you do minor repairs on the day? | QBCC says some inspectors can carry out minor repairs that arise from the inspection, and that any work over $3,300 needs an appropriate licence and a contract. |
| How soon can you visit, and how far do you travel? | We found no official figure for waiting times, so ask. |
4. Be careful with promises about the result
QBCC's June 2026 fact sheet says that forming or communicating a view about whether a pool meets the standard, or is likely to, is part of an inspection, and that after an inspection the inspector must issue either a certificate or a nonconformity notice. An inspector may still give general advice on proposed fencing or landscaping. So an inspector who tells you the result of a visit, but does not issue a certificate or a notice, is worth asking about. Pre-inspections explained.
5. Get your barrier ready before you call anyone
The visit goes best when you have already looked at the things an inspector looks at. The pool safety checklist lists them, and the step-by-step guide shows where the visit fits.
No charge to run the self-check. It is not an inspection.
How PoolPreCert lists inspectors
Inspectors in our directory are ordered by distance, verified reviews (from homeowners who booked through PoolPreCert) and how complete the listing is. Paying never changes the order, and any sponsored listing is labelled and kept separate. How the directory works, including where the data comes from. Browse inspectors near you.
How this page was made: the PoolPreCert team read each page listed under Sources on 31 October 2026 and wrote this in plain words. The dates beside each source are the dates those pages show. PoolPreCert is not part of QBCC or the Queensland Government, and only a licensed pool safety inspector decides whether a pool meets the standard.
