Start a self-check of your pool barrier

For: Pool owners · Last updated 30 October 2026

The self-check is a guided walk-round of your pool barrier. You answer a question at a time (gate, latch, fence height, gaps, climbable objects) and PoolPreCert gives you a list of things to look at before you book an inspector.

Who it is for: Pool owners, landlords and anyone selling or leasing a home with a pool. A pool owner account is created with an email and a password, and there is no charge to do the self-check.

How to do it

  1. Sign in and choose Add a property, then enter the address and your pool details.
  2. Open Checks and press Start a self-check on the pool you want to look at.
  3. Walk round the pool with your phone. Answer each question as you see it. Each one explains what to look for.
  4. Add notes or a photo to any question if it helps. Photos and answers save as you go.
  5. Press Finish. A sheet opens by itself with your three counts (Looks OK, Needs attention, Couldn't check) and up to three nearby listed inspectors who take requests. Press Ask all, check your details and press Send. If you close the sheet, a Book an inspector bar stays at the top of the results page.
  6. Below the sheet, the results page marks each item Looks OK, Needs attention or Couldn't check, and a Before you book an inspector card lists what to fix and what to check in person.

How to read the results

Looks OK means that on the answers you gave, nothing stood out. Needs attention means something you described may need fixing or a closer look. Couldn't check means you were not able to answer, so it is worth asking the inspector to look.

These labels describe your own answers. They are not a result for the pool, and they are never a score or a likelihood.

What it does not do

  • It is not an inspection and it does not decide whether a pool meets the Queensland standard. Only a licensed pool safety inspector does that.
  • It does not give a certificate and does not lodge anything with the QBCC.
  • It does not promise that an inspector will accept the pool.

Common questions

Do I need an account?

Yes, an account keeps your answers, photos and results together so you can come back to them.

Can I do the check again later?

Yes. Start a new self-check whenever you change something, such as a gate or a latch. Your earlier checks stay on the Checks page.

Does it cost anything?

The self-check itself has no charge.
